“Ask Maps”: Google Integrates Gemini AI to Answer Complex Questions Inside Google Maps
Google has announced a major AI-powered update to Google Maps, introducing a new feature called “Ask Maps”. This innovation allows users to ask complex, real-world questions and receive personalized, detailed answers directly inside the app through the Gemini AI model.
Ask Maps: Speak to Maps Naturally
With Ask Maps, users can interact with Google Maps in a natural, conversational way, describing their daily plans or specific needs. Examples include:
-
Finding a quiet restaurant for a group at a specific time.
-
Locating the nearest charging station without waiting long.
-
Discovering the cleanest public restroom nearby.
The Gemini model analyzes these detailed queries and provides precise recommendations, including directions, user ratings, photos, crowd levels, and location types. Results may also include places the user previously saved or interacted with.
Additionally, the feature allows direct actions, such as booking a table at a restaurant with a single click when supported, making daily planning faster and more efficient.
According to Mariam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps, Gemini’s responses rely solely on Google Maps data, not information from other apps like Gmail. Customization depends on previous searches, saved locations, and user interactions, while ads do not currently influence Ask Maps suggestions.
Availability
Ask Maps will initially launch in the United States and India for Android and iOS devices, with plans to expand to more countries globally.
Immersive Navigation: A Visual Upgrade
Google also unveiled Immersive Navigation, a major visual update described as the biggest change to Google Maps navigation in over a decade.
This update provides realistic 3D maps, enhanced colors, detailed buildings, roads, bridges, terrain, and greenery, with automatic angle adjustments during driving to highlight essential information.
Key navigation elements include:
-
Traffic lanes
-
Pedestrian crossings
-
Traffic signals
-
Stop signs before turns
The system also explains why a route is recommended, offers alternatives based on live traffic, user reports of accidents or road work, and provides additional guidance on parking or walking paths after reaching the destination.
Rollout
Immersive Navigation will begin rolling out in the United States next week, with other regions to follow. It supports Android, iOS, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in systems.
